Post 5: First Comes Love

Documentary Poster
Prior to learning about our post #5, I had recently watched this documentary via HBOgo out of boredom.(also because I am pregnant so why not?). I thought it was a really great documentary because I think it is inspiring for women, especially older women. The documentary is produced, edited, filmed and starred by Nina Davenport. It is about her journey to motherhood. At the prime age of 41, she decides she wants to become a mother. She is a single woman living in New York City. She asks her best friend from college to supply the sperm; he is a gay man who has no intentions of being the "father figure" to the child. She gets pregnant on her first try and as she goes through the pregnancy and even post-partum she explores her relationship to her own father and shows how much their relationship impacts her life. The huge obstacle she faces other than her age is the fact that she has no boyfriend or husband. So this child does not come from an traditional family support system.
I thought this was a really good documentary and I would recommend anyone and everyone to watch it. She is very raw when it comes to the issues of family both hers from childhood to her becoming a mother and starting her own family. She has always wanted to be a mother and she decides to take control and go for it unconventionally knowing there are hardships ahead. Here is a short interview with Nina Davenport on her break-through documentary, First Comes Love.
