Post 5: Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer

For my final post, I would like to take a moment to highlight the genius that is Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the creators of the ever sex positive, ever feminist Broad City. These two are taking the mostly sophomoric, juvenile male watched "Comedy Central" by storm only at 31 and 28, respectively. With the help of executive producer/perpetual feminist cheerleader Amy Poehler, these two women took their low budget YouTube webseries to the next level, allowing a wider audience to see the power behind a powerful dynamic female duo.

L to R: Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, & Amy Poehler
The basic premise of Broad City is the misadventures, often relating to sex, friendship, and marijuana, of two young women in New York City. What differentiates this show from others focusing on women is the bond that the two girls have. They support, care for, aid, and sympathize with one another. They build each other up, though they are never too clear which direction they are heading, professionally or personally. It comes as no surprise that a show with such a pro-women outlook is created by two self proclaimed feminists with a total of 6 women and 3 men in the writer's room. Too often, there is the singular story of female friendships: both women are competing against each other where a man or love interest interferes with their friendship. No, not Abbi and Ilana. They are too busy supporting each others' hobbies and sticking up for each other against whoever stands in the way of their destiny.

One of the many reasons Broad City is so important to me is Abbi and Ilana have constructed a more accurate representation of the friendships in my life. They allow my girl friends and I a weekly half hour slot to watch two women share our experiences and the easiness of support, conversation, and laughter. Plus, it's just an added bonus that all around superstar Amy Poehler who created arguably one of the most positive, feminist character on television supports these two women as much as I do.
