Our class discussion last week raised a
lot of questions in my head about the involvement of men in the reproductive
life of women and their own, and how they can bring those together as far as
responsibility, protection, knowledge and well being are discussed. It got me
thinking that if a man is needed to create a baby, he should always take a more
active role in everything else it takes to have one, or everything it takes to
not have a baby and still enjoy a healthy sex life. It inspired me to show men
not only how they can improve or what they are doing wrong, but how they can
really become good partners in a healthy relationship, whether it is a
committed one or not. From here on our conversation about contraceptives and
the male birth control pill inspired me to take it one step further and explore
the very feasible possibility that men could take part in the avoidance of
pregnancy as an outcome of pleasurable sexual relations. It was very shocking for
me to realize how many people, especially teenagers, do not get the proper
sexual education and information they need in order to become healthy sex partners.
The system probably spends more time and money telling them what not to do
rather than telling them how to do things the right way! Therefore, my final
project will be the creation of an infomercial for the Sperm Control - a male
birth control pill that will take the burden off women and will empower men
controlling their own body and sex lives and not their female partner’s.
The question arises from the possibility
of manufacturing such pill is whether men will actually be receptive of the
idea, and start sharing the responsibility of the practice of sex that doesn’t
result in a pregnancy with their female partner? Even if the partner is a long term lover or a
one night stand, men share 50% of the result outcome of an unprotected sex and
therefore should participate in the act that prevents any unwanted outcome as
well. After
an acting scene that will portray a couple and sex partners' reliving result when finding out the male takes the Sperm Control, I am planning to get into more depth of the reasons why men
should now experience the burden of the birth control pill. Because this
infomercial’s audience will be mainly men and boy-teens, the choice of words is
going to be in ‘their’ language, as men are attracted to things that give them
power and control, and therefore could turn it into a positive experience. Some of the reasons will be the responsibility shared with them and their partner when they do decide to expend their family, the finding that says these pills
release hormones that make sex even more enjoyable, and the fact they could now take control over their own sex lives including the outcomes.
a Hopefully I could
finish shooting and collecting the material for the video by the end of April,
and will finish editing by the end of the first week of May. I would like to
upload the video to social media outlets such as YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and
Google+, hopefully starting a good conversation with others after publishing
it. In the future this project not only could demonstrate my skills in
producing, filming, editing and directing, but could also show my will to
change people’s perspectives on matters they deal with and affected by every
day of their lives. Hopefully the conversation will continue over these social
media outlets, and perhaps could lead to a future change, if not only in our
government by voting for the right candidate in the next elections for example,
after becoming more aware and informative of their agenda in reproductive
rights, but also in society and the way we view people’s choices over their
body and sex lives.
This is an awesome idea!! I learned about the male pill in a psych class last semester and my entire class was stunned. That was the first time I'd heard of it myself. What I keep hearing is that it isn't a widespread phenomenon because of a "lack of interest" but like the link you provided said, 66% said they'd try it, and that's definitely a start!
ReplyDeleteAn infomercial is a great method to get a conversation started about this pill, and will definitely act as outreach! I think it would be interesting to interview men themselves and ask if they'd use this contraception, why/why not etc. (not sure if that's what you meant by filming) Your own research might make for strong statistics to incorporate into your informercial (ex: "19 out of 20 men surveyed said..." -it's not a professional survey by any means, but it might paint a different picture for your target audience).
I look forward to seeing the final product!
